March Panorama

Welcome to the March edition of Energy Panorama.

Our featured report this month considers the diverse and plentiful critical mineral reserves found in the Americas, notably copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite, rare earth elements, antimony, potash, and manganese. But as co-authors Chris Nyce and Mateo Micucci underscore in Critical Minerals: The Western Hemisphere's Opportunity turning that endowment into resilient, high-standard supply chains will require governments to move quickly on permitting, investment incentives, and trade frameworks.

The report maps the upside but also chokepoints and examines how market shocks and export controls are reshaping access and lays out a practical hemispheric blueprint: from time-certain permitting and price-risk tools to social license, ESG standards, and the traceability that buyers increasingly demand.

With the inauguration of Jose Antonio Kast on March 11, the IOA podcast series spotlighted Chile with an insightful discussion of the election, the transition, and what the Kast government's agenda means for Chile's economy, energy sector, and critical minerals.

Leveraging our inaugural data centers and energy forum in Chile in 2025, we are pleased to convene a similarly structured forum in Mexico City on May 14. The event will bring together public officials, industry leaders, academic experts, and civil society to examine how rapid digitalization is reshaping energy demand, grid reliability, sustainability, and investment opportunities in Mexico. As one of Latin America's fastest-growing digital economies, Mexico sits at a critical juncture where energy policy and digital infrastructure strategy must advance together.

As the calendar turns to April, the countdown begins for the 7th annual Madrid Energy Conference set for April 27-29. MEC26 will bring together senior policymakers, industry leaders, investors and analysts to showcase projects and collaborations that highlight the relevance of the Europe-Latin America energy nexus. We hope to see you in Madrid next month!
